Should Disney Scrap Live Action Star Wars Projects in Favor of Comics and Cartoons?

Featured Replies

I'm not sure I've met a Star Wars cartoon I did not like/love, and most of the franchise's comics have been entertaining. But, there are more than few live-action Star Wars projects that - to put it bluntly - sucked. Now, that Dave Filoni has risen to co-director status, wouldn't it be better for Disney to lean into the parts of the franchise that IMHO are the most entertaining?

I really liked season 1 of Ahsoka and I’m excited to see season 2, and I still have hope they can make The Hunt for Ben Solo happen, which would be the most excited I’ve been about at Star Wars project in years

I think the criticism about Star Wars is over blown. I have pretty much enjoyed everything that's come out (with like, one glaring exception) but the animated projects have been my least favorite. I think people have just put way too many expectations on Star Wars and have convinced themselves that it "sucks" before really ever giving most things a chance.

Nothing wrong with having high expectations for the content we consume - hopefully it keeps the content creators focused on putting out top-level entertainment. I think, like every multi-decade continuing story, you can never have perfect consistency over the life of the franchise. But, but, but .. since Disney took over the Star Wars franchise, the live-action parts of the story, like any long-running comic book, continuation of the story requires it to be "farmed out" to multiple creators, each with their own idea or vision of what it should be. This has led to a fair amount of inconsistency for a franchise that previously was very consistent. However, the cartoons have consistently maintained their quality, storyline, and adherence to the "enjoyment principle." Again, it seems that focusing on a strength can't be a bad thing.

Not for me. The only major live-action misfires were The Rise of Skywalker (which came from specific circumstances and Lucasfilm/Disney desperately attempting to pander to audiences who hated The Last Jedi) and The Book of Boba Fett. A lot of it is just fine, but that's worth it for the highs of things like The Last Jedi, Andor, and the first couple of seasons of The Mandalorian. Live-action is the reason Star Wars exists, it's the reason I love it, and I'd never want to lose that, I just hope it can eventually get back to the movies feeling like true events, which doesn't seem likely with The Mandalorian and Grogu, but maybe with Starfighter.

You just have to start with The Last Jedi when mentioning the good Disney-era Star Wars releases...

You're right to point this out, it's so good I should've started and ended with it!

I agree re: the criticism. Since Disney bought Lucasfilm, there's only been one Star Wars project I just do not like (one guess as to what it is). I've basically enjoyed everything else to varying degrees - even Book of Boba, which is probably the weakest of the live-action TV but wasn't as bad on a rewatch when I knew what I was getting myself into. The stuff with him and the Tuskens is interesting.

I like the animated series, but live-action is where it's at. If they stopped making new live-action Star Wars movies I'd be very sad.
