March 8Mar 8 Last week I found my original copy of Vice Project Doom for the NES and I had completely forgotten what an absolute riot this game was. (Shout to my folks for keeping all my childhood possessions in plastic tubs all these years!)If you haven’t played VPD (aka Gun-Dec in JP), here’s the elevator pitch: released in 1991, it’s a genre-blending action adventure game for the NES set in a dystopian cyberpunk future. It mixes platforming, driving, and first-person shooter segments in a way that felt pretty ambitious for the time and for the most part it pulls it off. The story, the aesthetic, the difficulty curve — it all holds up better than I expected. (I remember back in the day doing the ol'Back To The Future thing of calling my friends...and saying have you seen this!)It's wild to think about how blown away I was with this game at the time. Similar to Ninja Gaiden it featured rich (for the time) cinematic sequences that had me completely immersed in its corporate espionage and sci-fi plot. While I know the games has become more popular in recent years given its "hidden-gem" status I was curious: Did you play VPD back in the day? Any favorite stages or moments? And are there any other NES games you’d recommend that strike a similar chord? On a side note — I just finished Elden Ring and I genuinely think VPD gave me more trouble. Make of that what you will 😂**note apparently you can play the game on the Switch via its NES online service. Edited March 8Mar 8 by KeeperReyo Trying to upload image but can't get it to work.
