I'm new to this site but have always wondered, how do others go through their anime backlogs?

Some friends recommend getting the biggest ones out of the way like One Piece, others to get the best over with, and others with the shortest ones as if it was paying of the smallest debts. How do you chose to get through your backlog and why?
