Is My Hero Academia the new Meta for Superhero Stories?

Featured Replies

Manga is generally not known for its superhero stories, and yet My Hero Academia was actually a really good superhero story that has captured the world's attention. So, with both DC nd Marvel hoping to capture a bigger share of the global audience, as well as maintain its domestic dominance, which is losing out to manga/anime, should they adopt the My Hero Academia model of focusing on the development of teenagers with superpowers into functionally effective young adult superheroes rather than the more traditional adult experienced hero?

They make a pass at this every once in a while with stuff like Strange Academy, Avengers Academy, the various iterations of New Mutants/Generation X or Young Justice/Teen Titans, but it never sticks because a) DC and Marvel (and the direct market publishers in general) are terrible at and almost disinterested in bringing in new readers and b) there can be no reasonable expectation of real development for these characters when DC and Marvel are fully invested in keeping a certain status quo with only the illusion of change so that they continue to feed their parent corporations' film and licensing departments, where the real money is made.

My Hero Academia doesn't have to worry about maintaining a shared universe in perpetuity, so it can get away with a lot of stuff that DC and Marvel can't, or at least won't try to get away with. And even if they do tell those stories, it won't matter if they can't get it into the hands of readers outside of the aging direct market demographic.

Japan does heroes differently. Most of the time. They are not so super.. more like power rangers or gundam .use robots. Heck their spider-Man from the old days had a megazord and a car. And a jet.

But alot of manga and anime does give people superpowers. Or magic. But Japan is different for their superheroes than American.

But BNHA. (That's Boku No hero academia for anyone who doesn't know) But this show is inspired by America superheroes and video games. And Nintendo. I Read some of the manga. I mainly watch the show.

They both can co exist. Side by side. They would help each other
