7 Sci-fi books that haven't been turned into Movies or TV

Featured Replies

I just read an article regarding 7 sci-fi books that haven't been turned into movies or TV shows yet, but should be.

I was really hoping to see a Gerard Klein book called The Day Before Tomorrow on the list. I'm sure there are many more books you'd like to see on the list.

Please share a favorite book and why you'd like it on the list.

I'll explain why I think Gerard Klein's The Day Before Tomorrow should be on the list.

How many here like Ray Bradbury sci-fi? Well if you do, Gerard Klein has been called the Ray Bradbury of France.

The French original of the English translation came out in 1963. In 1972 the English version was published. I read the book in 1977 for the first time and though then I'd love to see this on the big screen. The story is a time travel story, where a society with time travel capabilities and seeing into the future is their way of preserving their dominance in the know universe.

When they look into the future and see a society that challenges their dominion, they send a specialized team to that society before they are ever a threat and destroy it, thus ensuring their dominance.

But something unusual happens when the team is sent to Ygone. "They encountered a fate no theorist had projected. They met with immediate ambush, they met with a strangely peaceful culture that could not be fathomed, and they finally were confronted with all the contradictions and temporal knots that the whole system of time-change had to imply."

The book was also chosen for the Jules Verne Prize Novel. It is a very short 128 page novel, but is rich in detail. I've owned the 1972 and the 1982 editions. The only real difference was the cover art for each edition.

I've also written to the French film maker Luc Besson, as this book seems to lend itself to movies he has already done. You will recognize him by some of these titles, The Fifth Element, Lucy, Valerian, and The Messenger. You too can write to him on his website if you think he should make this book into a movie at www.lubesson.co/contact

Also let me know if you've read this book and if you also would like to see it on the big screen.

Hi there! I actually wrote this article! There were so many books I could have put on the list -- there are a lot of great sci-fi books out there.

I think part of the reason why this one actually hasn't been adapted for screen despite having a pretty interesting premise is two-fold: it's extremely short and it is extremely detailed, but the details don't necessarily lend themselves to a straightforward live-action adaptation without some significant deviations from the main story. One of the things that Klein does really well with The Day Before Tomorrow is that he puts a lot of things on the page for the reader, but in doing so... there's a lot on the page which makes it much trickier to properly adapt and remain faithful to the story.

I've always been torn whether Saga should be made into a tv or movie. On one hand, it would be cool, on another, I feel like no one could do it.

I'm desperate to see the other three Southern Reach books by Jeff VanderMeer adapted for live-action. Alex Garland's Annihilation from 2018 is one of my favourite movies, and I would love to see the entire story get told on-screen.
