Sarah Michelle Gellar just announced on Instagram that the new Buffy show isn’t happening anymore. Does anyone have more info?

OMG, this is terrible news for Buffy fans. Sarah Michelle Gellar just posted on her Instagram saying that the new Buffy the Vampire Slayer show is not going to happen anymore.

From what I understand, the project, which was supposed to be a continuation called Buffy: New Sunnydale, was being developed for Hulu and even had an Oscar-winning director attached, but apparently the platform decided not to move forward with it.

Sarah said she wanted fans to hear the news directly from her first, and you can tell she’s really disappointed too. The show was supposed to feature a new Slayer while Buffy returned in some capacity.

Honestly this is heartbreaking. I was really excited to see Buffy back after all these years.

Does anyone know more about what happened?

Was the pilot bad, or did Hulu just cancel it suddenly?

Based on reports, it sounds like the pilot just plain didn't work. I'm not totally surprised by this tbh. Even though I love Chloe Zhao's work, it doesn't translate to more mainstream stuff like a Buffy reboot
