Reasons for collecting

Featured Replies

Just curious, what drives everyone to collect comic books? For me, collecting nowadays is really nostalgia and bring back a childhood activity. I used to draw all the time from comics, I’m desperately trying to get back into that. Actually think that I enjoy it more now than I did when I was a kid. I currently have 15 long boxes of comics, mostly Marvel and one short box.

I just got back into it recently as well and for me, I always felt a little guilty about buying something like comics for myself since I didn't see them as a necessity, but now I see it as a way to relax, learn, and participate in a really cool community. Comics helped me get past some tough times during childhood and last year my wife talked me into going into a comic book shop because I never would buy anything for myself. That one trip to my local comic book shop literally changed my life and made me realize it's ok to do things that don't make income and I stopped seeing it as a wasteful expense. It's now a huge part of my life and I'm so glad I got back into collecting. I think when we get older we end up working too much and surrounding ourselves with negativity, especially with social media, and collecting helps keep our minds healthy and gives us an outlet. Plus you get to talk with the coolest group of people!

Part of it will always be tied to nostalgia and great memories growing up, and being in the hobby and that world has led to so many great memories over my adult life that I hope I'm 99 years old and still reading the newest books of the week haha.

Also love the posters, and the Jada Toys diecast figures rule!

The tangibility of holding something you love is it for me. I can read comics and books on my phone or tablet with ease, but it's just not the same as holding it, same with action figures!

I started collecting comics as a kid because - you know, as a comic lover, that's what kids do. But then, as I got older, I bought into the idea of comics as being an investment. So, I bought the boxes and plastic bags and stored them away from sunlight, etc. But then life took me to different places every few years, and I could not continue bringing my collection with me. So, I put them into storage. While I am sure I have a couple of valuable issues out of maybe 2,000 comics, I'm not sure that their net value matches the amount I've spent to "care for" my collection all these years. But, I agree there's no price on the nostalgia vibe I get from pulling out an issue and reading through it again - and reminiscing on those simpler times as a kid when reading a comic book was one of the most fun things I could do.
