August 21, 2025Aug 21 In this year's Superman movie ... the vibe is clearly against a deconstruction or a dark, brooding take. It returns to the hopeful, heartfelt, and classic take on Superman of old ... and it is working with the fan base. This feels like a direct course correction from the Snyderverse's more conflicted Superman. But does this mean comic books ... which now clearly take their cues from the various cinematic universes, will follow suit? Personally, I hope they do.
August 21, 2025Aug 21 It does seem that DC Comics -- similar to James Gunn's new DCU -- is following this blueprint as well with All In. Heroes being heroes again is a fresh take, which is crazy when you think about how comics are supposed to be telling these stories, but got lost along the way.
August 22, 2025Aug 22 I really like the idea of a more optimistic worldview. I obviously enjoy the elseworld stories that are darker and more literary - but with the world feeling so uncertain and divisive, I definitely see myself gravitating more toward heroism over deeper stories of internal and social conflict.
August 22, 2025Aug 22 CB Team I think both things can coexist in comic books. Movies and TV shows are incredibly expensive and take a long time to make, so creators are usually stuck with a single model. We get dozens of new comics every month, so there's plenty of opportunity to expand and try out different things. Case in point, I'm loving the Absolute universe!
August 22, 2025Aug 22 I feel like this is a thing that comes in cycles a lot, and there are great comics on either end of it, be it All-Star Superman and DC: New Frontier on the optimistic end, or The Dark Knight Returns and Watchmen on the other end. The problem is that too many creators conflate optimism with lightness and seriousness with grimdark aesthetic, which is how you end up with a lot of shallow, brightly colored comics or the grim 'n' gritty glut of the '90s. Really, what you want is a mix of both and, more importantly, for both to be done well.I think DC is doing a much better job of maintaining that balancing act right now. Too many of Marvel's books fall into the middle ground where they're neither all that inspiring nor particularly dark and end up being nothing at all.
August 22, 2025Aug 22 CB Team What I am hoping we see more of in comics at this time is meaningful classic heroism -- that optimism and hope that isn't too rose colored glasses tinted and sends more of a message that yes, things are difficult, but there is still good and hope. Right now, I feel like DC is doing a solid job with that. Then again, I'm just generally unhappy with Marvel at the moment.
October 18, 2025Oct 18 Do you think comics and all superhero stuff would be where it is today if that stuff just sticked to one idea. One theme, one style??Remember multiverse rules are anyone can be anything. Any color, race, sex, species, etc etc etc Why put limits on this?Someone once said " maybe Stan lee did or someone else before him". They said. Comics are a reflection of our times. Our state of the world. The authors put a little bit of our world into THOSE comics. Sometimes that's a good idea. Sometimes not.
