Whether you’re brand new to comics or just getting back into them, this is the place to share and discover great reads.

Drop your favorite series, story arcs, or graphic novels that you think everyone should try at least once. Old or new, Marvel or DC, indie or webcomic, it all counts.

If you can, tell us why you recommend it and what makes it special.

I’ll start with One World Under Doom. I picked it up recently and really enjoyed it. It feels like a classic Marvel event story but with a new energy. I’m curious if anyone else has read it yet and what you think of the direction they’re taking with Doom.

I have two that don't get alot of attention that i know of

News From the Fallout: its a post apocalyptic story set after a nuclear bomb is set off in Nevada, its a six issue series

Space Ghost: The second volume just started and I've enjoyed it so far, hits in a nostalgic way

I started News From the Fallout but forgot to get the 2nd issue when it first came out and got behind. Is it pretty good? The Space Ghost covers look amazing!

If anyone’s been curious about trying something outside Marvel and DC, Image has been putting out $1 first issues for a lot of their titles. It’s a great way to sample new stories without spending much.

The Unnamed Universe line has been really solid so far. Geiger, Redcoat, Junkyard Joe, and Rook: Exodus are all great series.

They’ve also got some great standalone series like Lost Fantasy if you’re into that genre.

Image is doing some of the best world-building right now. Definitely worth checking out if you want something different.

Really enjoyed Recoat and Rook, though fell off a bit just due to so much other stuff. Never could get into Geiger as much, and haven't checked out Junkyard Joe yet. I need to catch back up on Ghost Machine and get up to speed!

Lost Fantasy is fantastic! Really enjoying it.

If I were to hand anyone a few trades of books to just give a try, those would be:

Far Sector: If you want to see what Lanterns will probably be like and meet one of the coolest new Green Lanterns of the last decade in an alien crime thriller, Far Sector is the book to read. Also, it's absolutely stunning with Jamal Campbell's art.

Once & Future: Again, another artwork powerhouse from Dan Mora, but this time, what if all of the fairy tales and legends of King Arthur were real and a secret organization had been guarding mankind from their presence all these years? You'll also meet Bridgette, who lives in a senior living home and yet has gun caches stashed outside and knows where all of these secrets actually are. Brilliant.

Something Is Killing the Children: If you're looking for something on the horror side, this series consistently rips your heart out of your chest and keeps you hooked like few other books on the market. It's stunning too, and the premise of an order of monster hunters that kill monsters only kids can see? Insanity in the best way.

I see Something is Killing the Children every time I go to my local shop and have been considering starting it. I may give it a shot next time I'm in there.

Junkyard Joe is pretty good and I think it's only 6 issues. I've only read the first issue of Lost Fantasy, but it definitely has potential! I'll probably pick up the trade paperback.

Action Comics 1 - The humble beginnings of Superman.

Amazing Fantasy 15 - The classic origin we have all heard for Spider-Man told in its original way.

To me, these are the first two comics you should read for DC and Marvel, respectively.

Here are some of my reccomendations as a newer comic book reader:

Absolute Superman- What really introduced me to comics and Superman and I've been hooked

Spider-Man Blue- a short but sweet Spider-Man story I liked which deals with Peter reminiscing about Gwen Stacy and him fighting some of his villains like the Rhino and the Lizard.

Kingdom Come- Just an absolutely fantastic comic. One I've a always wanted to read and definitely one of the best I've read so far, just really well written and kind of bleak and intense but also one that pumps you up at the same time.

Superman For All Seasons- As of now this is my favorite comic of all time. It just hits right in the feels and really showcases just how awesome Superman is and has some really heartfelt moments in it. If there's one comic on my mini list to read for sure it's this one.

Blackest Night- this is one I shouldn't have bought as someone new to comics and Green Lantern but I got it on a whim and it was so good. Just a crossover of like all of the DC characters with the black lanterns being like zombies and the introduction of the White Lanterns its just so good and reminds me that I need more GL in my life

Sorry for not much Marvel I haven't read as much Marvel or Image/Indie comics like I have DC

Great list! I actually ordered Kingdom Come yesterday and can't wait to read it! I'm starting to get more into D.C. and bought a huge stack of Batman trade paperbacks and those D.C. compacts.

After Action Comics 1, I very heavily recommend reading the next 30 issues of Action Comics. It is the first large scale Superman run and the man from Metropolis is first introduced to readers in 31 classic adventures. He became the world's first modern superhero. Roughly two years before the appearance of Captain America, Superman becomes a symbol of hope for America at one of its low points in these pages. Author Jerry Siegel and Artist Joe Shuster launched themselves in the minds of comic book fans for eternity with this. The champion of the oppressed has become the backbone of, now, Dan DiDio's DC Comics. June 1938, the iconic first illustration of Superman smashing a car against a rock and the rest, as the say, is history.

I just finished reading all three of Marvel's Midnight Universe comics, and I'd definitely recommend checking them out, especially if you're a fan of horror. Fantastic Four has a great Lovecraftian, cosmic horror vibe, Spider-Man makes excellent use of body horror, and X-Men is kicking things off with a really interesting vampire story. I love seeing Marvel take these characters in darker directions, and I'm looking forward to seeing where these stories go. Has anyone else picked these up yet? Which one was your favorite?

I've been wanting to go back and read the older comics for a while. Maybe now is a good time.

I have been searching for somewhere to discuss them to really motivate me to go through them, but, alas, slim pickings.
