What Does G.I. Joe Need To Be A Monster Movie/TV Franchise?

G.I. Joe is a beloved IP, and continues to have success thanks to comics in the Energon Universe and action figures as part of the stellar G.I. Joe Classified line. It hasn't had an easy time of making it big on the big screen or TV though, and there have been some decent attempts. With the upcoming crossover with Transformers, it has one more major shot, but what do you think the franchise needs to do to help it become a major movie and TV franchise once more?

It needs to be interesting! GI Joe just doesn't have the juice to stand out on its own. It's just army dudes fighting more army dudes, and we got that with so many other movies. A more kid friendly take on war just aint gonna be it.

When I heard there was going to be an Energon Universe animated series, I leaped for joy.

I do not care at all for GI Joe but those books have shown me the light.

I think animation is really a perfect medium for G.I. Joe, just because you can go crazy with all the vehicles and sci-fi stuff, but i'm also excited for the live-action side too.

To this point, the people bringing GI Joe to life have seemingly...not ever watched the cartoon. I mean I'm sure they have but it doesn't ever seem like that based on the movies that get made. GI Joe is thoroughly silly and over the top. They shoot lasers and Cobra puts the Joes through deadly funhouses and all kinds of weird shit. The movies are all "we gotta stop the nukes for the president" and it's just way too literal of a take for what should be a lot wackier.

Think about creatives like Lord/Miller or Daley/Goldstein. Those are the kinds of voices needed to make GI Joe really work.

100% agree on this. The comics have captured that zaniness while still doing lots of character work. The films should just take that formula and run with it.
