What did you think of Guillermo del Toro’s Frankenstein?

I finally got around to watching Guillermo del Toro’s Frankenstein, and what stood out to me most was how the movie is told in two parts. The first focuses on Victor, and then the story really opens up once we start seeing things from the Creature’s point of view.

It felt less like a traditional monster movie and more like a back-and-forth between creator and creation. A lot of the weight comes from perspective, guilt, and consequences rather than big horror moments, which made it feel closer to the spirit of the original novel.

Curious what everyone thought about that approach. How did you feel about the split perspective, and where would you rank this among other Frankenstein adaptations?

I loved it, this might have been my favorite 2025 release. I wasn’t really a Jacob Elordi fan before this movie, and I have a framed photo of Andrew Garfield in my house so I was super bummed when that casting switch happened originally, but after seeing the movie, Elordi had completely won me over and I don’t know if anyone else could have played it as well. I’m excited that he got the Oscar nomination for it too!!

I enjoyed it too! I wasn't sure about it at first, but liked it immediately. I just wish I had started watching it earlier, it was such a long movie : )

I loved it. I don't think it's in my top 5 for GDT, but what was clear is that it was a full accumulation of his entire career to get to this movie, and that there's always room for reinterpretation of something that seems like it's been done to death. Elordi was the real wildcard for me, I've liked him in stuff before but I thought he was incredible as the creature.

(As an aside, before I saw the film, I had just re-watched Young Frankenstein, which meant two movies in the movie got a laugh out of me when they should not have)

I honestly think it was one of my top 3 horror movies of 2025! I'm a big fan of the book, and this felt like such a love letter to the novel. Del Toro really handled this adaptation so well, which really isn't at all surprising.

I agree, definitely top 3 horror movies. I was surprised because I honestly didn't know what to expect. I thought it would just be a monster film, but wow, it had so many layers.
