Is the Switch 2 Worth Getting?

Featured Replies

I've been seeing everyone on social media playing Pokopia and I want to play it so bad. However, it's only available for Switch 2. I own the OLED version of the first Switch, so I can't really justify getting the newest one, especially with its price tag. But I really want to play Pokopia, especially when it's quite popular now. I missed out on playing Animal Crossing while it was still popular during COVID, and I feel like I'm getting FOMO all over again. Is it worth getting the Switch 2? Especially since I only want it for one game??

I think the feeling of regret, once you're done with Pokopia and the Switch 2 starts collecting dust, will be stronger than the FOMO of not playing it. But maybe give it a few more weeks, and after the launch hype dies down, maybe the FOMO will go away. I know that has happened to me with numerous games in the past. If not, maybe then it's worth upgrading?

I think it depends on how likely you are to play more Switch 2 games in the future. Since Nintendo will be releasing pretty much all new titles as Switch 2 exclusives going forward, it'll be worth it in the long run if you're a big Nintendo gamer. Pokemon Gen 10, like Pokopia, will be a Switch 2 game. But right now the catalog of Switch 2 exclusives is still pretty small, so that's definitely something to keep in mind.

Pokopia is excellent and you'll easily get many, many gameplay hours out of it because it's massive. But the Switch 2 itself will only be worth it if you can see yourself wanting other games for it eventually, I think.

I agree with @Amanda Kay Oaks , it depends on the mileage you expect to put on the Switch 2. Pokopia alone is worth hundreds of hours of gaming (my clock is above 50 hours, and I still haven't reached the credits, and there's so much to do, I literally feel like I'm at the end of the tutorial). Of course, that's only reasonable if you play that kind of game for that long. Other Switch 2 titles are great, Donkey Kong Banaza among them. Also, I'm confident there will be a new mainline 3D Zelda and a new 3D Mario in the next couple of years. It's up to you to know if that sounds worth it.
