Batman Is Overrated—And Not Even the Most Interesting Character in His Own Stories

Featured Replies

Alright, I’ll say it: Batman gets way more credit than he deserves. He’s often portrayed as the ultimate strategist and the most compelling character in DC—but when you really look at it, his villains are far more interesting than he is. The Joker, Two-Face, even lesser-used characters like Calendar Man often bring more depth, unpredictability, and narrative tension than Batman himself.

Think about it—how many Batman stories are truly about him, versus being driven by his rogues gallery? Without them, he’s just a brooding guy with money and gadgets.

And here’s the real kicker: if Batman didn’t have plot armor and near-omniscient writing behind him, would he actually stand a chance against half his enemies?

Curious to hear what everyone thinks—am I completely off, or is the Dark Knight a little too overhyped?

You do make a good point regarding Batman’s Rogues Gallery. His popularity is second to none. Go to any retail store, Walmart, Hobby Lobby etc and there is a lot of licensed merchandise. Batman outsells the competition, unless there is some anime that outsells him in other parts of the world? Yeah his Rogues Gallery sells well too.

I somewhat agree, like Iron Man, his "power" is just being rich and having cool toys. His rogue's gallery is phenomenal, though. I am just slightly obsessed with Harley Quinn, Poison Ivy, and Catwoman.

I think it's less that Batman is overhyped and more that he's oversaturated. There are, at any given time, just too damn many Batman books going at once.

I agree with Nicole, in that I think Batman is oversaturated, and it's the same in the toy world. That said, the problem is that Batman sells, so it's kind of a never-ending cycle of we don't need more Batman stuff, but people keep buying Batman stuff, so then we get more Batman stuff.
