June 20Jun 20 It seems like Box Office Theory thinks so, even if the holiday weekend might mess with those numbers. What do you think? Will Supergirl manage to bring in similar money to its predecessor?
June 21Jun 21 CB Team I've always thought it looks like it's gonna be a fun time at the movies, so I don't think it deserves low box office. Maybe if the full reviews are positive the word of mouth will help it. The good thing is that the budget is around $170 million, so it doesn't need to break records to be successful.Kind of a tricky release date for it though. Toy Story is still gonna be making money, Minions is the week after and then it's all about The Odyssey and Spider-Man.
June 21Jun 21 Only my opinion here, but does this have anything to do with a female lead? I’m planning to watch it and have faith in James Gunn. Hopefully it is great and word will spread after release.
June 21Jun 21 CB Team The good news is that it doesn't have to match Superman. The DCU is already going, so even if this one is a break-even movie for the studio it's not a loss

Hopefully it is great and word will spread after release. It always has something to do with it having a female lead. You see this cycle repeat with every single female-led superhero movie. I recognize the pattern. Also, I don't understand why everyone keeps wanting to credit James Gunn with things for this movie. Craig Gillespie is the director and it kind of crushes my soul a little every time I see people (in general, not you) act like this is Gunn's movie.
June 25Jun 25 Gunn is the executive producer and architect of the DCU as a whole. You're right that Gillespie deserves credit for directing the film but you can't say that Gunn doesn't have a hand in it as well. He's DC's Kevin Feige.

June 26Jun 26 CB Team Between the low box office and the fact that there's nothing clearly happening after Man of Tomorrow, I'm worried the Paramount merger is going to kill the DCU before it even started.

But yeah it's weird how there isn't anything with a confirmed release date after Man of Tomorrow. Maybe that'll change at SDCC?
June 26Jun 26 CB Team Do we think this could have done better at the box office if it had a less competitive release date? I get wanting it to be a big summer blockbuster, but June was loaded (including Toy Story 5) and July is stacked too. Part of me feels like if Supergirl came out in the spring maybe the tracking would be higher - at least for opening weekend.
June 27Jun 27 CB Team It was always going to perform worse for a myriad of unfair reasons, I think it'll be fine as long as DC Studios understood all of this beforehand and didn't expect a batman level box office return that even superman couldn't achieve
