Which comic book villain could carry a solo movie?

We’ve seen a few villains get their own stories, but it doesn’t happen often.

Which villain do you think could carry their own movie and keep audiences interested? Could it be someone like Doctor Doom, Carnage, Magneto, or an underrated villain who deserves more attention?

Who’s your pick, and how would you make it work on screen?

I'll post my picks in the comments.

I’d love to see a Doctor Doom movie, obviously. He’s one of the few villains who could anchor an entire story without needing a hero to balance him.

I also think Juggernaut could work if they leaned into the mythology behind Cytorrak. There’s enough lore there to build a dark, supernatural storyline that goes way beyond just brute strength that most people link to Juggernaut.

I believe Magneto could, but more as a messiah type villain. There is a storyline in the volume 2 Guardians of the Galaxy comic book where Magneto left the earth with the mutants who followed to establish their own planet free from persecution from homo sapiens. A movie about the fight for freedom by any means necessary may work.

Thanos? Specifically his journey from wanting what was best for his people and being a citizen that was wronged by his world leaders which ultimately turn him into the villain he became.

I also wouldn't mind a film (or trilogy) from the perspective of a villainous Odin and his daughter Hela, perhaps explaining in more detail why Odin eventually chose to fight for peace rather than be a cause for fear and invading.

Oooh I didn't even think about Odin and Hela! That would be a great trilogy.

For Marvel, I agree with @Deathwalker in Magneto, though I also think you could make a more personal journey type of solo film work for the character as well.

For DC, I would probably go with either Bane or Deathstroke, because there are things you could dive into there for both, but I believe there is a movie that features both of them in the works already, so that's probably out.

Deathstroke is certainly a good shout, maybe even in something with Batman, but from the perspective of Slade Wilson rather than Bruce Wayne.

Typically films are shown from the perspective of the hero, few films really tell the story of the villain, save from maybe Bane in the Bale films and Thanos in the MCU.

I think with a good story, any villain can hold a solo movie. But there are a handful that already have great backstories to explore. One that I haven't seen mentioned here so far is Sinestro. His fall from grace and the rise of the Yellow Lanterns could be a great space opera.

Oh, and Brainiac, depending on how they tackle it, could also be a good choice. The fifth season of Harley Quinn even has an episode dedicated to his backstory. That show is a comedy, and it still managed to make a good Brainiac-focused episode, so using the same concept in a serious movie would be amazing!
