I tend to agree. There are some individual starters I don't love, personally, but every gen has at least one great design at least for its first form. I initially didn't like the Gen 10 ones, but I've already come around on them. Still not sure which one I'm going to pick when the game comes out, though!

This! I think what sets the starters apart from me is how they evolve. There are some evolutions that I truly dislike, but the basic forms are always great.

There's definitely some designs that lack that "umph" Popplio, Chimchar, and Chikorita were mons I never really vibed with. All their evolutions were cool enough but I couldn't get myself to pick them over their competition, Popplio<Rowlet/Litten, Chimchar<Turtwig/Piplup, and Chikorita was never gonna take the spotlight from Totodile and Cyndaquil, not even the anime could save Chikorita imo.
