Can a new Slayer live up to Buffy the Vampire Slayers legacy?

Featured Replies

The upcoming Buffy the Vampire Slayer series is not a reboot. Instead, it introduces a brand-new Slayer in a world shaped by Buffy Summers’ legacy. This means the original story still matters, but the focus shifts to a new generation.

Do you think a new Slayer can carry the spirit of the Buffyverse without Buffy as the main character? What elements from the original series need to stay for it to feel like Buffy, and what should change to let the new Slayer stand on her own?

Is this the right evolution for the franchise, or does Buffy only work when Buffy is at the center?

I like the idea that the Buffy story from the previous series means something, and I also like the passing of the baton as it were. Buffy is still going to be an important part of the series, but she's just one part of a greater mythology, and I dig that we're having a bit of both.

I think so. It's baked into the fabric of the show from the very beginning that this is generational, so I like the idea of seeing someone new take on the mantle. And, as Matt says, the key here is that Buffy is still involved and can be the one guiding the new Slayer, not just getting replaced by her. More than anything for me, Sarah Michelle Gellar agreeing to do it, and how patient they've been with it, is the best possible sign to have faith (and, if we're lucky, to have Faith).

I really hope we get Faith in the mix. Such a great character

Yeah, definitely! Oddly, I would love it if we had a sort of co-star situation; Buffy to appeal to those adults in the room, Nova to Gen Z. Buffy's always been perfect for a generational saga imo.

I could see that working. Keep her as a legacy character and give the new one time to build.
