Best Video Game Openings Of All-Time

Featured Replies

I've been putting together a list of the best video game openings of all-time for the site and while my entries are locked in already, I was curious to see what games hooked you in that first 20 - 30 minutes? An obvious one is Uncharted 2, when Nathan Drake wakes up in a derailed train, dangling off the side of a cliff.

My first thought here is Skyrim, but I can't decide if that's a best or worst opening to be honest. It's iconic, but also sooooo long to sit through when you want to start a new playthrough. Kingdom Hearts has to be up there for me, with that cinematic music video style opening. Classic.

The Last of Us for sure, but also Inscryption. That game is one of my favorites for how it forces you to learn the mechanics by playing, not holding your hand.

Skyrim is a great opening. The shot of the dragon swooping in and landing above you as you're about to be executed is burnt into my mind.

The Last of Us is probably number one, but Inscryption is a great shout. Any game that can get you invested without having to stop and make you read endless tutorials is a winner for me.

The Last of Us might be my pick as well. That was intense

I'll also vote for The Last of Us.

The opening segment of Ghost of Tsushima. The battle on the beach. I wish you could play that again on New Game+

Spider-Man 2 (Sandman fight)

Jedi: Fallen Order (the whole bit where you fight your way through the train)

Call of Duty Vanguard .... Oooo, that soundtrack!

Just to add more options, God of War. The first one. The battle against the Hydra was unlike anything we had ever seen until then.

I was thinking a bit about God of War 3 when coming up with other ideas, climbing Mount Olympus on the back of titans before beating the crap out of Poseidon was genuinely insane lol
