Jumanji vs. Dunesday

Everyone's excited for Dunesday, but did you know there's a new Jumanji movie coming out this December too?

Not sure what Sony's thought process is here. I know the past two held their own against Star Wars movies, but it still seems crazy to me to put this out against Avengers and Dune. If it was or the other it would probably work, but I don't see how three major tentpoles can coexist in the same window.

I'm sure Sony wants that holiday season box office money, but I think they should really move Jumanji out of December completely. Whether it opens a week before Dunesday or a week after, I think it's gonna get crushed.

Yeah, I'm fascinated by this decision. I mean, to be fair, Jumanji is weird. It... actually held its own against Star Wars, back when Star Wars was big, so Sony may be gambling on the same.

I'll watch it though. Love the first two films.

I always find the Jumanji movies entertaining, but I'm not sure I'm venturing to the theater for this one. I might just wait for streaming.

This. They are fun, but they are not the priority for a theatrical experience.

If the moviegoing industry was still where it was in 2017-19 then I could maybe see the argument, betting on holiday legs, fun family movie, drawing power of The Rock, but even then going up against two blockbusters with the expectations of Dune and Doomsday would be a big risk. Doing so in a post-Covid theatrical landscape, when The Rock is no longer the franchise box office draw he used to be, just seems silly. It wouldn't shock me if it does ok because clearly people do turn out for those movies, but it's very hard to see
