What is your favorite current (or at least within the last 5 years) non-superhero comic book?

I love the graphic novel adaptations of The Adventure Zone podcast, I think it's so fun to see how they keep the unscripted feeling in there while also heavily editing the story for readability.

I was enjoying Grim from BOOM! Studios back when I was reviewing it. I should get caught up since it's nearing its conclusion.

Five years ago was about exactly when I started reading 2000 AD weekly, and while I haven't loved every single serial that gets published in there, it is almost always worth the time to read. Judge Dredd has been consistently good with "A Better World" being possibly the best comics storyline I've read in the last year or two. Brink is probably the best sci-fi ongoing in comics right now. Proteus Vex is up there as well, and Feral & Foe is a great fantasy serial.

Otherwise, I mean, Saga is the obvious answer, even if it hasn't been quite as perfect since the big, long break. 20th Century Men skirts around the edges of being a superhero story, but I'm still going to count it as non because most people wouldn't recognize it as such. Ditto The Power Fantasy. Kaya rules. I'm hit or miss on James Tynion's work, but Something Is Killing the Children and WorldTr33 are both great horror comics. Monkey Meat is great satire. DIE is up there as well. Oh, and Lazarus, which just came back for its final arc. Usagi Yojimbo is an underappreciated classic that's been good for 40 years.

Lots of good comics!

Charles Soule's Legacy of Vader has been really delivering so far! Honestly, anything Soule writes is usually golden. Though it's over 5 years ago, his Darth Vader is probably my favorite comic series. And his Obi-Wan and Anakin one-shot miniseries.

Star Wars talk reminded me that I should shout out the recently wrapped Star Trek and Star Trek: Defiant series. Both are very good and give us the closest thing we're likely to ever get to a Star Trek: Picard for the DS9 & (non-Seven of Nine) Voyager characters (and even, to a lesser extent, for the ENT and TOS characters).

Beneath the Trees Where Nobody Sees is one of the most unique intersections of genre and aesthetic that really only works in comics, it's such a breath of fresh air. Cherry on top is the new sequel series is going in an exciting direction too.

The Last Mermaid is my MVP newcomer. The "Nice House..." saga is a close runner-up.

I read that as "The Little Mermaid" for a split second and was very confused, Kofi.

Great question ... and I'm so into superhero comics and manga that it took me a while to think about it before I remembered that newish - old series Walking Dead Deluxe.

I can't just pick one so I'll pick three haha, because there are just too many I love right now.

I have to start with BOOM! Studios' Something is Killing the Children, which is one of the best in comics month in and month out.

Next is Image Comics' Feral, which has developed its own voice and tone from Stray Dogs but is just as much of an intense and emotional rollercoaster ride as the original.

Last but not least is Image Comics' Blood & Thunder, which has an almost '80s buddy cop movie feel while also having a wealth of worldbuilding and depth. Really dig all three, and Exquisite Corpses also gets an honorary mention haha (okay I cheated but whatever).
