So, WB just announced that there's going to be another new LOTR movie -- and Stephen Colbert is writing it. How do y'all feel about that? I'm actually pretty excited -- Colbert's love of LOTR makes this feel like a perfect choice.

The Colbert aspect is kinda wild and at least makes me more intrigued in this than The Hunt for Gollum, but I still struggle to muster up too much enthusiasm for the franchise going further down the "story-within-a-story, nostalgia-grab-for-first-three-movies" route

Seconded. Sometimes it's okay to just let stories end.

Is this the Hunt for Gollum or something different?

Something different! This one is set 14 years after ROTK, with Sam, Merry, and Pippin reminiscing about the past, which is a framing device so that it can adapt some book chapters that the Fellowship movie cut (like the Hobbits with Tom Bombadil) https://comicbook.com/movies/news/warner-bros-announces-a-new-lord-of-the-rings-movie-and-youll-never-guess-whos-writing-it/

I was excited at first when I saw Stephen Colbert was involved since he's a fan. But then I read the synopsis, and I don't think it bodes well. I am curious about it still, but I'm keeping expectations low.

I think Colbert's love of the material might just be the thing that makes it worthwhile. If anyone else were doing it, I would be arching an eyebrow so sharply but Colbert is practically scholarly about things so I have great hope.

Oh nice! I'll definitely check this out!

I'm not experienced with the LOTR movies at all, but this all just seems like more of that squeezing blood from a stone with a story that they're really trying to force back to life. Hard not to see it cynically from the outside of the fandom, but after seeing all of your opinions that seems to be the leading sentiment
