The Future of Star Wars Movies - And The Hunt for Ben Solo

Featured Replies

I wasn't always the hugest fan of Kylo Ren/Ben Solo - especially how the story was resolved in Rise of Skywalker (there's not a lot I DO like about that film).

But this, somehow, actually disappointed me: https://comicbook.com/movies/news/star-wars-favorite-confirms-disney-cancelled-plans-for-a-surprise-movie-but-fans-still-want-this-characters-story-told/

Which got me thinking, what should the future of Star Wars movies be? Spin-offs like Starfighter? Continuation of the mainline with Rey? There have been so many ideas we've heard are in some stage of development but what do fans ACTUALLY want? In hindsight, as much as I like aspects of the sequel trilogy, I'm not sure I can honestly say "I want it all."

I'm leaning toward spin-offs if I had to choose but that Ben Solo movie idea does intrigue me...

I'm in the minority for sure, but I think whatever they do there should be a balance of creators that are avid Star Wars fans vs ones that don't hold it as sacred. The former gets you stuff like Ahsoka and The Force Awakens, the latter gets you Andor.

Spin-offs are definitely the way to go IMO. Have writers pitch stories and pick the best ones, no matter who or what they're about. Once a few hits come out, they can think about doing an Episode 10.

I definitely feel like Kylo Ren's story feels unfinished, so that Ben Solo movie would definitely be interesting. I can see why it didn't go through since fans were so frustrated at how his story ended in the movies, but that could've been a redemption arc.

In general, I think the spin-offs have been doing more interesting stuff than those last big movies did. They should lean into exploring beyond just the same old Jedi story for a bit, I think.

I think the formula is to have two sides to the franchise: the more grounded one (Andor) and the more fantastical one (Jedi stuff).

There are fans of both. But both sides need to feel like "events" and be released more sparingly. One grounded TV show (or season of) a year; a big film every couple of years (either grounded or fantastical).

I DON'T THINK Jedi lore works on TV. Too costly, too underwhelming visually, not epic enough. We know that now.

It feels like Lucasfilm wants to do spinoffs, but they still have no idea what they actually want to do with them. At Celebration 2023, they made this big deal announcing Dawn of the Jedi, New Jedi Order, and Filoni's New Republic movie, and none of those have taken any meaningful step forward (I know Filoni's been busy with Ahsoka Season 2). The Rey movie keeps getting passed off to different writers, and now Mangold has that Paramount deal.

I don't care if it's spinoffs or a continuation of the Skywalker saga. I just want Lucasfilm to have an actual plan they can stick to. Stop announcing all this stuff that doesn't get off the ground. A biblical epic about the discovery of the Force sounds awesome. Despite Rise of Skywalker (single biggest moviegoing disappointment in my life), I still like Rey and Daisy Ridley and have been interested in seeing what New Jedi Order looks like. It's frustrating no headway is being made on those. They shouldn't announce these movies until there's an actual finished script in place.

I think standalone spinoffs would be cool. Bring in talented directors and give them the freedom to tell the stories they want. I'd love to see what Soderbergh or Fincher could do with this stuff. It'd be fresh and exciting.

On that note, I think Lucasfilm needs to understand how to keep each project in its lane. I absolutely love The Mandalorian Season 1, but I feel the show only got worse with time because they decided it should be connected to animated projects, and Ahsoka, and The Book of Boba Fett... Meanwhile, Andor did its own thing without worrying about setting up other projects, and it was utterly amazing! I want quality TV and movies, and I don't care if they are sequels or spinoffs. However, I think that each project should be willing to tell a good story, which seems somewhat secondary to franchise-building in Star Wars over the past years.

The irony of Lucasfilm finally having an actual finished Star Wars movie script after how many years of failed projects only for Disney to be the ones to turn it down.

This Ben Solo thing is crazy. You'd think Disney would be happy Lucasfilm had a finished Star Wars script (from a great filmmaker, no less!)

Whatever they do and wherever they do it, they need it to drop complete.

Weekly drops give moron critics time to bash something that is incomplete.

In fairness, the Star Wars live-action shows have been very hit or miss - even by the end.

The Book of Boba Fett was not good from the first episode.

I would have liked to have seen that Kylo Ren movie.

I think they should do new stories in the past and future.

As well as spinoffs. I do like where stories are set during times we have seen too, to see other perspectives.
