Who Is Your Favorite Muppet?

With it being the holidays, I find myself watching a lot of Muppet content -- tis the season -- but now it makes me wonder what everyone's favorite Muppet is. I want to say Kermit the Frog because he's great, but I also have a weird love for Crazy Harry.

How could you simply choose just one? I don't remember a time when I didn't love the Muppets and I remember vividly the day Jim Henson died, My sister, eleven years my elder, called my mother to warn her. They knew that once I heard the news, I'd be inconsolable. At any rate, I'll name some of my favorites at the end of my rant:

The sale of the Muppets to Disney was one of the absolute worst acquisitions in entertainment history. They've never known quite what to do with them and consequently, we see a half-baked Muppet project perhaps once every 5-10 years, only to have it fade away again because it wasn't a hit and Disney would rather throw money at Marvel or Pixar. The one and only project that took me back to my childhood love for all things Henson was The Muppets (2011) and the key to that film's success was Jason Segel, You could tell he was a hardcore fan and he knew exactly what to do with them. The movie was a true love letter to the Muppets and I actually bawled at the end of it.

Today, I don't know what infuriates me more about The Muppets. I hated that the film made me realize that there'd been an entire generation that had grown up not knowing who Kermit or Miss Piggy were. That still seems like an episode of The Twilight Zone; they were so ever-present while I was growing up and hearing that even one child missed out on the fun was rather like having someone tell me they'd never seen The Wizard of Oz, which is all-out unforgivable deprivation that fully warrants a parent or parents being slapped across their faces. Perhaps I'm most upset that once again, Disney squandered the Muppets, an insult I'm reminded of every time I logged into Disney+ and am greeted by the menu that displays each of their major properties: Disney, Pixar, Marvel, and Star Wars. With all of the incredible content out there, why the hell do they not have a category expressly dedicated to them?

I am, however, cautiously optimistic after seeing a teaser for the upcoming one-off special for The Muppet Show yesterday. Reviving what is by far their best project is simply so obvious, but Disney would rather waste them in a thinly-veiled episodic comedy rip-off of The Office. Sure, variety shows died fifty years ago, but The Muppet Show was timeless. How can Disney not see that signing some of today's brightest stars to host a half-hour ride through the Muppet studios and the razor-sharp satire that impressed the adults even more than the children? Do we even have that kind of writing talent today? Judging by Miss Piggy's visit to Chelsea Handler's show a few years back, they simply don't know whether it should be entirely aimed at kids or compete with the popularity of shows life Avenue Q and make it all raunchy jokes. Who knows? Maybe this time, they'll get it right.

My favorites - and this list encompasses the entire Muppet universe: Miss Piggy, Janis, Floyd Pepper. Taminella Grinderfall (The Muppets' Frog Prince), Sweetums. Mokey and Red Fraggle. Ma and Pa Gorg. Hugga Wugga. Count Von Count and Big Bird. Miss Finch. Fughetta Faffner (The Ghost of Faffner Hall - now that's obscure).

But my favorite all-time Muppet is likely (drum roll): Marjory, the Trash Heap. Originally conceived for Sesame Street, the character of the sentient landfill of wisdom was ultimately nixed in favor of Oscar the Grouch and his garbage can because while Sesame Street was originally presented as an inner-city ghetto for young children that lived in such a place, promoting a heap of garbage was less appealing than a badly-tempered monster that sounds like an NYC cabbie and lives in a trash can. Luckily, she was ultimately fished out of the mountain of discarded concepts and found her home on Fraggle Rock.

Well, I had just spent an hour typing out a Muppet diatribe but lost it all when I tried to sign in via Facebook. Perhaps it's for the best, but I'll leave my favorites (how can anyone choose just one?): The Muppet Shows' Floyd Pepper, Janis, Dr. Teeth, Miss Piggy, Sweetums, Statler and Waldorf, Hugga Wugga and Higgy Wiggy. The Muppet Frog Prince's Taminella Grinderfall, The Ghost of Faffner Hall's Fughetta Faffner (how's that for obscure?!) Sesame Street's Big Bird, Count Von Count, Oscar. Follow That Bird's Miss Finch, Fraggle Rock's Mokey and Red Fraggle, Ma and Pa Gorg,

But if I had to choose just one: Fraggle Rock's Marjory the Trash Heap. (Interesting trivia: Marjory was originally conceived for Sesame Street. But as the show's original target audience were inner-city kids, the producers eventually came to the consensus that portraying an inner-city ghetto as being strewn with enough trash that a sentient, wisdom-spewing mini-landfill could spring to life on a street corner simply didn't sit well with the Children's Television Workshop. The character was scrapped in favor of a foul-tempered creature inspired by an NYC cabdriver and living in a garbage can. Marjory was, however, rescued from the mountain of discarded character concepts and finally brought to life as the oracle of wisdom on HBO's Fraggle Rock.

Despite growing up with the OG muppets, I actually think Abby Cadabby is my favorite, mainly for her role in Mecha Builders and later-day Sesame Street productions.

The Swedish Chef is probably the one that makes me laugh the hardest. There's a skit where he tries to cook a dinner for Kermit's family reunion or something and it is one of the funniest things I've ever seen.

You can't go wrong with any Muppet though. They're all great. Rowlf always made me laugh too.

My top two are definitely Gonzo and Sam Eagle. I love Gonzo for being a proud weirdo, but I also like the guy who just randomly pops into the collective madness and declares "You are all WEIRDOS." I think they're both the best expressions of Apollonian and Dionysian Muppetry.
