Thoughts on Lanterns Trailer?

What did you think of the Lanterns trailer? I was definitely caught off guard by how grounded it was. Surprised we didn't see any ring powers or effects. Guess they're holding that back for closer to release.

Still excited to watch the show though! Feels really different.

It was a W E I R D vibe-setter.

That said: the cast is excellent and I feel like underneath the True Detective vibes there will be some dope fantastical DC/GL lore that gets explored. So I’m still hopeful.

I'm not going to lie, I didn't love it as much as I wanted to. There was just something off when it comes to Hal and the overall vibe. I'm hopeful that's just due to not having a lot of context yet and not getting the full picture, so I'll reserve any judgement for the full show, but as a trailer and hype level, it didn't exactly deliver what I was looking for.

This. I still don't know what they are aiming for. I trust Gunn would only approve a great script, and the showrunners are amazing. But the trailer felt weird, and not necessarily in a good way. Just weird.

I liked it 🤷‍♂️ Delivered the True Detective vibes they always promised, liked the dynamic between Hal and John, the show doesn't release until August so it makes sense to me we don't really see powers (and then opening dialogue sets that up - "don't get hung up on the jewellery"), and I'll always be happy to see Kyle Chandler doing Kyle Chandler things (clear eyes, full hearts, can't lose).

Also loved it: when offered a True Detective spin on DC lore (which we were months ago), I expected a True Detective spin on DC lore, and thus am not losing my mind about it like The Discourse seems to want everyone to.

The Penguin was The Sopranos vs DC, and might be the best DC TV content ever made. Aversion to creative difference baffles me. Particularly when we get a lore-accurate Dungeons & Dragons movie, and nobody sees it, and the MCU is repeatedly accused of near-sighted homogeneity.

I think they're holding back all the green on purpose because we've already seen what the GL powers look like in the DC Studios world. I'm sure once we get it here in the final episode it's gonna be nice. Might be wack and not a fun space faring adventure, but that's clearly not what this is.

I agree -- I think they are holding back a lot of stuff deliberately and I think that is probably wise. I also sort of like the approach that they are making this grounded so it doesn't feel like a "comic book show".
