Most Important Romance in Marvel Comics?

So, for no reason whatsoever I've been thinking about the romances in Marvel Comics and wondered... which one do you think is the most important?

I will die on the hill that it's Emma Frost and Scott Summers.

For me it's Storm and Forge, don't me wrong T'Challa is great for her but Forge was way more interesting and Lifedeath was one of the best issues exploring that. Another would have Reed and Sue, I'm very basic with it but my fav ice cream flavor is vanilla so that might explain a lot.

Peter Parker and Mary Jane Watson. The fact that when they are apart, fans rage all the time says enough.

However, for me, I actually enjoy it when Peter and Black Cat are dating, although MJ is the more important romantic interest.

My favorite is easy, as it is unquestionably Cyclops and Emma Frost. They are my favorite X-Couple by a mile (and yes, that does include Rogue and Gambit, though I do also love them.).

As for most important though, I probably judge every Marvel couple by Mary Jane and Peter Parker, one of my fave couples in comics. That's partly why the newer eras of Spider-Man don't really click for me, especially with all the editorial mess around them. As Ultimate Spider-Man has shown, when they are clicking, do does Spider-Man as a series.

It’s funny because I was looking at this subject while attending NYCC this year 2025. I have collected the Luciano Vecchio comics for latest Uncanny X-Men title. He has some nice covers featuring just the characters and I have also collected the recent X-men 97 Funkos. While at the con I was debating whose signature I should put on which items. Then I broke it down to couples because this year they had the whole voice cast from the X-Men animated TV series. Then after a while I broke it down to couples. For me the one I always liked, followed, cheered for, etc was ROGUE and GAMBIT. I always wanted to see them get together and was ecstatic when they did.

Daredevil and Elektra. Doesn't matte how many love interests get introduced for Matt, it always comes back to her, not to mention that Frank Miller's run is something every new take on the character continues to be defined by.

The Cyclops - Jean Grey - Wolverine love triangle. I feel like it's more than a comic storyline: it's a psychological/sociological test just like Batman and Joker or "Are You A Batman? Or A Superman?"

For guys, it expresses the silent war between the rebellious, rougher, bad boy types (your MMA brawlers, rebel-artists, punks and skaters, thugs,, etc.) - and the tall, square-jawed, popular captain of the frat/football team type.

For Ladies, it illustrates the dilemma between the guy whose call you know you shouldn't answer at 2 AM (but always do), and the guy you want to bring home and show off to mom and dad and all those friends you want to leave sick.

All I know Is: Jean learned to live her BEST life during the Krakoa Era...

Not Marvel, but as cliche as it is, I’ve always thought one of the most important comics romances was Superman and Lois Lane. It’s boring and played out in a lot of ways but even as a kid I thought it was cool that relationship was such a great metaphor for Superman as a whole: a God-like being becomes the best of humanity because of how much he loves Earth’s people. And even early-ish depictions of Lois present her as his equal in a lot of ways - highlighting why there’s more to being strong than sheer might. Meanwhile, Superman and Wonder Woman is one of the worst - for the exact same reason. Superman being super-into another God-like being isn’t interesting or particularly revealing. How bad that pairing is only highlights why Lois is so important.

Kitty Pryde and Rachel Summers, even tho it only have been subtextual this far.

Emma and Scott are a strong pick because their relationship was not just emotional, it changed the command structure and ideological tone of the X-Men books. For me, the most important comic romances are the ones that keep affecting the wider narrative long after the relationship starts or breaks down. That is also why I find it interesting to compare Marvel pairings with other serialized formats, including 한국만화, where long-form romance and character tension are often handled very differently. When a relationship can shift team dynamics, reader loyalty, and story direction, it becomes bigger than simple shipping.

Interesting choice! I do love Scott and Emma.

I'd go with Reed and Sue. The first, the foundation of the entire Marvel Universe imo. Also: Spidey and MJ.

I would LOVE to see this one become full canon! Although I admit I've always liked the idea of Kitty and Illyana lol

Its funny as an older xmen fan - for me the emma cyclops romance eventually turned me from comics. breaking up scott and jean for me felt so forced in Morrison's run - hated it. Scott and Jean's love literally stopped the Phoenix and saved the universe so that is the most important to me. But Peter and MJ run a close second.
